Lean-To Shed Free Plans

Whether you need extra storage for your gardening tools or a small workshop for your hobbies, a lean-to shed is a versatile addition to any home. By utilizing an existing wall of your house as one side of the shed, you can save space and materials, making it a cost-effective option. In this article, we'll guide you through creating your own lean-to shed with free plans.

Materials and Tools

Before starting construction, gather the necessary materials and tools:

  • Pressure-treated lumber for the frame and siding
  • Roofing felt and shingles
  • Windows (optional)
  • Door
  • Concrete footings
  • Screws or nails
  • Circular saw
  • Drill
  • Level
  • Tape measure

Step 1: Design and Layout

Determine the desired size and shape of your shed. Measure the available space on the side of your house and mark the footprint of the shed. Create a simple sketch of the layout, including the location of the door and any windows.

Step 2: Prepare the Foundation

Excavate the area for the concrete footings, which will provide a solid base for the shed. Ensure the footings are at least 12 inches below the frost line and extend beyond the perimeter of the shed by 6 inches. Pour concrete into the footings and allow it to cure.

Step 3: Frame the Walls

Cut the lumber for the wall frames according to the plan. Assemble the walls on a flat surface, securing them with screws or nails. The front wall should be taller than the back wall to create the lean-to design. If desired, install windows to provide light and ventilation.

Step 4: Attach the Walls

Position the framed walls against the side of the house and secure them to the concrete footings using bolts or anchors. Ensure the walls are level and plumb before attaching them. Frame the door opening and install the door.

Step 5: Install the Roof

Cut the roof rafters to the desired length and angle. Install the rafters on top of the wall frames, spacing them evenly and securing them with screws or nails. Cover the rafters with roofing felt and then install the shingles, overlapping each row for watertightness.

Step 6: Finish the Exterior

Install siding on the exterior walls to protect them from the elements. You can use pressure-treated wood, vinyl siding, or metal siding, depending on your preference and budget. Paint or stain the siding to match your house or create a contrasting look.

Step 7: Organize and Enjoy

Install shelves, hooks, or other storage solutions inside the shed to keep your belongings organized. You can also add a workbench or other features to suit your specific needs. Enjoy the extra space and convenience of your new lean-to shed!
